disulfiram, combinations
P03AA54
Forms & Strengths
- Disulfiram 250 mg / Benzyl benzoate topical combination preparations
Adult Dosing
- Topical application to affected skin areas (e.g., scabies or pediculosis) as directed by specific product labeling, typically applied once and left for a designated duration before washing.
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients not well-established; use requires careful consideration of systemic absorption risks and age-specific guidelines.
Indications
- Eradication of ectoparasitic infestations such as scabies and pediculosis
- Topical antiparasitic therapy
Mechanism of Action
- Combines the aldehyde dehydrogenase inhibitory properties of disulfiram with the scabicidal and pediculicidal action of benzyl benzoate to paralyze and kill ectoparasites.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to disulfiram, benzyl benzoate, or any component of the formulation
- Application to raw, weeping, or heavily inflamed skin
- Concomitant systemic ingestion of alcohol (potential disulfiram-alcohol reaction if absorbed)
Adverse Reactions
- Local skin irritation, burning, or stinging at the application site
- Contact dermatitis and allergic skin reactions
- Erythema and pruritus
Drug Interactions
- Systemic absorption may theoretically interact with ethanol, producing a disulfiram-alcohol reaction (flushing, nausea, tachycardia)
- Potential for enhanced systemic absorption when applied concurrently with other topical penetration enhancers
