Forms & Strengths
- oral capsules containing 20mg copper
- injectable solutions with 1mg copper/mL
Adult Dosing
- 100-200mcg copper per day for Wilson's disease treatment
- 20-50mg copper per day for copper deficiency
Pediatric Dosing
- 20-100mcg copper per day for Wilson's disease treatment in children
- 1-5mg copper per day for copper deficiency in infants
Indications
- treatment of Wilson's disease
- copper deficiency
- prevention of copper deficiency in total parenteral nutrition
Mechanism of Action
- replaces copper in enzymes and proteins
- necessary for connective tissue health and immune function
- plays a role in iron metabolism and energy production
Contraindications
- hypersensitivity to copper
- liver disease with significant liver dysfunction
Adverse Reactions
- gastrointestinal upset
- hepatotoxicity with high doses
- nephrotoxicity
Drug Interactions
- zinc supplements may decrease copper absorption
- iron supplements may increase risk of adverse reactions
- concomitant use with penicillamine may increase risk of nephrotoxicity
