Forms & Strengths
- Ointment 2%
- Cream 2%
- Nasal Ointment 2% (calcium)
Adult Dosing
- Topical: Apply small amount to affected area 3 times daily for up to 10 days
- Nasal: Apply approximately half of the ointment from the single-use tube into each nostril twice daily for 5 days
Pediatric Dosing
- Topical (Infants >= 2 months): Apply small amount 3 times daily for up to 10 days
- Nasal (Children >= 12 years): Apply twice daily for 5 days; safety and efficacy in younger children not established
Indications
- Impetigo due to Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes
- Secondary skin infections due to S. aureus and S. pyogenes
- Eradication of nasal colonization of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) during institutional outbreaks
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly and specifically binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to mupirocin or its vehicle bases (e.g., polyethylene glycol)
- Not for intra-nasal use with the topical cream or ointment formulations
- Not for ophthalmic use
Adverse Reactions
- Burning, stinging, or pain at the application site
- Pruritus
- Rash
- Erythema
- Contact dermatitis
- Nausea (with nasal application)
Drug Interactions
- No significant systemic drug-drug interactions due to minimal percutaneous absorption
- Do not mix with other topical medications to avoid dilution and reduction of antibacterial efficacy
