Forms & Strengths
- Lozenge 0.1% (100 mg per lozenge)
- Oral spray solution 0.5% (5 mg/mL)
- Topical ointment 0.5%
Adult Dosing
- Lozenge: 1–2 lozenges every 2–3 h, max 6 per 24 h
- Oral spray: 2–3 sprays to affected mucosa every 2 h, max 6 sprays/24 h
- Topical ointment: thin film to affected area up to 4 times daily
Pediatric Dosing
- Children ≥6 y: same as adult but max 4 lozenges/24 h
- Children 2–5 y: ½ lozenge (or 1 spray) every 4 h, max 3 doses/24 h
- Under 2 y: not recommended
Indications
- Sore throat (pharyngitis) pain
- Oral mucosal irritation (canker, denture sore)
- Minor oral surgery pain
- Post‑dental procedure discomfort
Mechanism of Action
- Reversibly blocks voltage‑gated Na⁺ channels in peripheral nerves, inhibiting depolarization and impulse transmission
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to dyclonine or other local anesthetics
- Severe ulcerative lesions of oral mucosa
- Use in neonates or infants <2 y (lack of safety data)
Adverse Reactions
- Transient oral burning or tingling
- Local erythema or mucosal irritation
- Numbness of oral tissues
- Rare allergic rash or angioedema
- Systemic CNS effects (dizziness, seizures) only with overdose
Drug Interactions
- Concurrent use of other topical anesthetics may increase risk of systemic toxicity
- Caution with systemic CNS depressants (opioids, benzodiazepines) if excessive absorption
- No significant CYP‑mediated interactions reported
