Forms & Strengths
- Oral rinse solution 0.15% (w/v)
- Oral spray 0.15% solution
- Lozenges 0.5% (w/v) benzydamine
- Gels/cream 0.5% for oral mucosa
- Topical ointment 0.5% for skin
Adult Dosing
- Oral rinse: 15 mL, swish 30 s, expectorate 3–4×/day
- Oral spray: 1–2 sprays (≈0.2 mL) 3–4×/day
- Lozenges: 1–2 lozenges every 2–3 h, max 8/day
- Topical gel: apply thin layer to affected mucosa 3–4×/day
- Skin ointment: thin film 2–3×/day
Pediatric Dosing
- Children ≥6 yr: oral rinse 5 mL, swish 30 s, 2–3×/day
- Children ≥6 yr: oral spray 1 spray (≈0.1 mL) 2–3×/day
- Lozenges not recommended <12 yr
- Topical gel: small amount applied 2×/day
- Contraindicated <6 yr
Indications
- Acute sore throat (pharyngitis, tonsillitis)
- Oral mucositis and stomatitis
- Post‑operative oral pain
- Dental pain and gingivitis
- Topical relief of minor skin inflammation and irritations
Mechanism of Action
- Local anti‑inflammatory: inhibits prostaglandin synthesis via COX‑independent pathway
- Reduces cytokine release (TNF‑α, IL‑1β) and NF‑κB activation
- Membrane stabilizer with analgesic effect
- Mild local anesthetic by blocking Na⁺ channels
- Antimicrobial activity against oral flora
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to benzydamine or excipients
- Children <6 yr (insufficient safety data)
- Severe hepatic impairment (caution, limited systemic absorption)
- Concurrent use of other local anesthetics on same site
Adverse Reactions
- Transient burning or stinging sensation
- Altered taste (metallic/ bitter)
- Nausea or vomiting if excessive swallow
- Localized erythema, edema, or rash
- Rare hypersensitivity (urticaria, angioedema)
Drug Interactions
- Additive local anesthetic effect with other topical anesthetics
- Avoid concomitant use of other NSAID mouthwashes to reduce mucosal irritation
- Caution with anticoagulants if large amounts swallowed (theoretical increased bleeding risk)
- Alcohol‑containing formulations may potentiate CNS depression with CNS depressants
