Forms & Strengths
- Metered-dose inhaler: salbutamol 100 mcg + sodium cromoglicate 1 mg per actuation
Adult Dosing
- 2 inhalations 3 to 4 times daily
- May take 2 inhalations 15-20 minutes before exercise or allergen exposure for prophylaxis
Pediatric Dosing
- Children >5 years: 2 inhalations 3 to 4 times daily
- Safety and efficacy not well established in children <5 years
Indications
- Prophylaxis and symptomatic relief of bronchial asthma
- Prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm
- Prevention of allergen-induced bronchospasm
Mechanism of Action
- Salbutamol: Beta-2 adrenergic agonist causing relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle and bronchodilation
- Sodium cromoglicate: Mast cell stabilizer inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to salbutamol, sodium cromoglicate, or any component of the formulation
- Tachydysrhythmias or hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (due to salbutamol component)
Adverse Reactions
- Tremor
- Palpitations
- Tachycardia
- Throat irritation or dryness
- Cough
- Paradoxical bronchospasm
Drug Interactions
- Beta-blockers may antagonize the bronchodilatory effect of salbutamol
- Potassium-depleting diuretics may increase risk of hypokalemia with high doses of salbutamol
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants may potentiate vascular effects of salbutamol
