isoprenaline, combinations
R03CB51
Forms & Strengths
- Inhalation aerosol/spray containing isoprenaline in combination with other bronchodilators
Adult Dosing
- 1-2 inhalations as needed for bronchospasm, not to exceed recommended daily limits per specific combination product labeling
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients not well established; use generally discouraged or strictly weight/age-adjusted per specific product guidelines
Indications
- Relief of bronchospasm in conditions such as bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Mechanism of Action
- Non-selective beta-adrenoreceptor agonist causing relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle and bronchodilation
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to isoprenaline or sympathomimetic amines
- Tachyarrhythmias
- Tachycardia or digitalis-induced toxicity
- Recent myocardial infarction or severe coronary artery disease
Adverse Reactions
- Tachycardia
- Palpitations
- Cardiac arrhythmias
- Tremor
- Nervousness
- Headache
- Paradoxical bronchospasm with excessive use
Drug Interactions
- Other sympathomimetic agents may potentiate cardiovascular toxicity
- Beta-blockers antagonize the bronchodilating effect and may induce severe bronchospasm
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and tricyclic antidepressants enhance cardiovascular effects
