pirbuterol
R03CC07
Forms & Strengths
- Inhalation aerosol: 0.2 mg per actuation (metered-dose inhaler)
Adult Dosing
- Bronchospasm: 0.2 mg (1 inhalation) to 0.4 mg (2 inhalations) every 4 to 6 hours as needed
- Maximum daily dose: 1.2 mg (6 inhalations) per day
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in children under 12 years of age have not been established
Indications
- Prevention and treatment of bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive airway disease
Mechanism of Action
- Short-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist that stimulates beta-2 receptors in the lungs, relaxing bronchial smooth muscle and inhibiting mast cell mediator release
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to pirbuterol, sympathomimetic amines, or any component of the formulation
Adverse Reactions
- Tachycardia
- Palpitations
- Nervousness
- Tremor
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Cough
- Nausea
Drug Interactions
- Other sympathomimetic agents may potentiate cardiovascular adverse effects
- Beta-blockers (non-selective) may antagonize the bronchodilating effect of pirbuterol and induce severe bronchospasm
- MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants may potentiate the vascular effects of beta-adrenergic agonists
