Mechanism of Action
- Selective beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist
- Stimulates intracellular adenylate cyclase, increasing cyclic AMP
- Relaxes bronchial smooth muscle and inhibits mediator release from mast cells
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to procaterol or other beta-2 agonists
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
- Thyrotoxicosis
Adverse Reactions
- Palpitations and tachycardia
- Fine tremor, especially in hands
- Nervousness, dizziness, or headache
- Hypokalemia with high doses
Drug Interactions
- Other beta-adrenergic agonists may potentiate cardiovascular toxicity
- Non-potassium-sparing diuretics may increase risk of ECG changes and hypokalemia
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and tricyclic antidepressants may enhance vascular effects
