R03CC14
Forms & Strengths
- Inhalation solution: 0.9 mg/mL
- Metered-dose inhaler (MDI): 0.5 mg/actuation
- Tablets: 20 mg
- Syrup: 1 mg/mL
Adult Dosing
- Bronchospasm (MDI): 1-2 puffs (0.5-1.0 mg) up to 4 times daily
- Bronchospasm (Inhalation solution): 0.5 mL to 1 mL diluted for nebulization, up to 4 times daily
- Oral: 20 mg 3 times daily
Pediatric Dosing

- Children 6-12 years (MDI): 1 puff up to 3-4 times daily under adult supervision
- Children over 12 years: Same as adult dosing
Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of bronchial asthma
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with reversible bronchospasm
- Prophylaxis of exercise- or allergen-induced asthma
Mechanism of Action
- Selective beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist
- Stimulates intracellular adenylyl cyclase, increasing cyclic AMP
- Relaxes bronchial smooth muscle and inhibits release of immediate hypersensitivity mediators from mast cells
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to reproterol or any formulation excipients
- Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM)
- Phaeochromocytoma
- Tachyarrhythmias
Adverse Reactions
- Fine tremor of skeletal muscle (especially hands)
- Palpitations and tachycardia
- Nervousness, anxiety, or restlessness
- Headache
- Hypokalemia at high doses
Drug Interactions
- Non-cardioselective beta-blockers antagonize the bronchodilatory effect and may induce severe bronchospasm
- Concomitant use with other sympathomimetics enhances cardiovascular adverse effects
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and tricyclic antidepressants potentiate vascular effects
- Potassium-wasting diuretics may exacerbate hypokalemia
