Adult Dosing
- 200 mg orally 3 times daily
- May be adjusted based on clinical response and tolerability
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients not established
- Use generally not recommended in children
Indications
- Mucolytic agent for the treatment of respiratory tract disorders associated with viscid mucus
- Adjunct therapy in bronchitis and tracheobronchitis
Mechanism of Action
- Thiol derivative that acts as a mucolytic
- Cleaves disulfide bonds in mucus glycoproteins, reducing sputum viscosity and facilitating expectoration
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to stepronin or related thiol compounds
- Active peptic ulcer disease
- Severe hepatic or renal impairment
Adverse Reactions
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Gastric irritation
- Hypersensitivity reactions including rash and pruritus
- Bronchospasm in susceptible patients
Drug Interactions
- Coadministration with antitussives may cause mucus accumulation due to suppressed cough reflex
- May enhance the gastrointestinal adverse effects of ulcerogenic drugs
