Forms & Strengths
- Oral capsules 10 mg
- Oral tablets 10 mg
Adult Dosing
- 10 mg orally three times daily
- Maximum daily dose: 30 mg
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients not established
Indications
- Mucolytic adjuvant therapy in acute and chronic bronchopulmonary diseases associated with abnormal mucus secretion and impaired mucus transport
Mechanism of Action
- Acts as a mucolytic agent that depolymerizes mucopolysaccharide fibers in bronchial secretions
- Reduces sputum viscosity and facilitates expectoration
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to neltenexine or related bromhexine derivatives
- Active peptic ulcer disease
Adverse Reactions
- Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain)
- Hypersensitivity reactions (rash, pruritus)
- Transient elevation of serum transaminases
Drug Interactions
- Concomitant antitussive agents (e.g., codeine) may cause risk of mucus stagnation due to suppression of cough reflex
- May increase penetration of certain antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, erythromycin) into bronchial secretions
