Forms & Strengths
- Oral syrup: 20 mg / 5 mL
- Oral drops: 40 mg / mL
- Extended-release tablets: 40 mg
Adult Dosing
- Cough suppressant: 40 mg orally 2 to 3 times daily
- Maximum daily dose: 120 mg
Pediatric Dosing
- Children 6-12 years: 20 mg orally 2 to 3 times daily
- Children under 6 years: Not recommended due to lack of safety and efficacy data
Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of non-productive (dry) cough
Mechanism of Action
- Centrally and peripherally acting non-narcotic antitussive agent
- Suppresses the cough reflex center in the medulla oblongata
- Exerts mild local anesthetic and anticholinergic effects on respiratory tract sensory receptors
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to isoaminile or any component of the formulation
- Productive cough with excessive secretions or respiratory congestion
- Severe hepatic or renal impairment
- Asthma and severe respiratory insufficiency
Adverse Reactions
- Drowsiness and dizziness
- Dry mouth and throat
- Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort
- Allergic skin reactions (rash, pruritus)
Drug Interactions
- CNS depressants (alcohol, sedatives, hypnotics): May potentiate sedative effects
- Anticholinergic agents: May enhance anticholinergic side effects such as dry mouth and urinary retention
