Adult Dosing
- Allergic rhinitis and urticaria: 5 mg orally once daily or divided into twice daily dosing
Pediatric Dosing
- Children > 12 years: 5 mg orally once daily
- Children < 12 years: Safety and efficacy not established
Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of allergic rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of chronic urticaria and allergic skin conditions
Mechanism of Action
- Selective histamine H1-receptor antagonist
- Inhibits histamine-mediated peripheral effects such as vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, and pruritus
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to talastine or other piperidine derivatives
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Concurrent use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
Adverse Reactions
- Drowsiness and sedation
- Dry mouth, nose, and throat
- Dizziness and headache
- Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, dyspepsia)
Drug Interactions
- CNS depressants (alcohol, sedatives, hypnotics): May potentiate sedative effects
- Anticholinergic agents: May enhance anticholinergic adverse effects
- CYP3A4 inhibitors: May alter plasma concentrations of talastine
