R06AD08
Forms & Strengths
- Oral solution: 0.33 mg/mL
- Syrup: 0.05% (0.5 mg/mL)
Adult Dosing
- Dry and irritative cough: 10 mg to 20 mg per dose, 2 to 4 times daily
- Maximum daily dose: 80 mg
Pediatric Dosing
- Children over 2 years: 0.125 mg/kg to 0.25 mg/kg per dose, 3 to 4 times daily

Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of non-productive (dry) coughs, particularly nocturnal or irritative
- Allergic rhinitis and allergic manifestations due to H1 antihistaminic properties
Mechanism of Action
- First-generation phenothiazine antihistamine with strong H1-receptor antagonistic properties
- Exhibits significant central anticholinergic and sedative effects contributing to antitussive action
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to oxomemazine or other phenothiazines
- Children under 2 years of age
- History of agranulocytosis
- Risk of urinary retention related to urethroprostatic disorders
- Risk of angle-closure glaucoma
- Concurrent use with alcohol or central nervous system depressants
Adverse Reactions
- Sedation and somnolence (most common)
- Anticholinergic effects: dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary retention, constipation, tachycardia
- Orthostatic hypotension
- Dizziness, confusion, or paradoxical excitation in pediatric or elderly patients
- Photosensitization
- Rare: leukopenia, agranulocytosis, respiratory depression
Drug Interactions
- Central nervous system depressants (opioids, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, sedatives): enhanced sedation and respiratory depression
- Alcohol: potentiation of sedative effects
- Anticholinergic drugs (atropine, tricyclic antidepressants): additive anticholinergic adverse effects
- Strong CYP inhibitors/inducers may alter metabolism
