natural phospholipids
R07AA02
Forms & Strengths
- Intratracheal suspension: 80 mg/mL (porcine lung extract)
- Intratracheal suspension: 35 mg/mL (bovine lung extract)
- Intratracheal suspension: 54 mg/mL (synthetic with proteins)
Adult Dosing
- Not applicable; indicated for neonatal respiratory distress syndrome.
Pediatric Dosing
- Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome (Prevention/Treatment): 100 to 200 mg/kg phospholipids intratracheally, administered in divided doses or single dose depending on specific product guidelines, within hours of birth.
Indications
- Prevention and treatment of Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) in premature infants.
Mechanism of Action
- Replaces deficient endogenous pulmonary surfactant in neonates, lowering surface tension at the air-liquid interface within the alveoli, thereby preventing alveolar collapse during expiration and improving lung compliance.
Contraindications
- None absolute in emergency treatment of RDS.
- Known hypersensitivity to specific animal-derived surfactant proteins or components.
Adverse Reactions
- Transient bradycardia
- Oxygen desaturation
- Endotacheal tube blockage
- Pulmonary hemorrhage (associated with very low birth weight)
- Apnea
Drug Interactions
- No clinically significant pharmacokinetic drug interactions documented due to localized intratracheal administration and rapid action.
- Concomitant use with other respiratory stimulants or depressants requires careful monitoring of vital signs and oxygenation.
