oxytetracycline
S01AA04
Forms & Strengths
- Ophthalmic Ointment: 1% (10 mg/g) with polymyxin B sulfate
Adult Dosing
- Ophthalmic: Apply a small amount (approx. 0.5 inch ribbon) to the affected eye 2 to 4 times daily or more frequently depending on infection severity.
Pediatric Dosing
- Ophthalmic: Apply a small amount to the affected eye 2 to 4 times daily (safety and efficacy established in pediatric patients for superficial ocular infections).
Indications
- Treatment of superficial ocular infections involving the conjunctiva and/or cornea caused by susceptible organisms
- Prophylaxis of ophthalmia neonatorum due to Neisseria gonorrhoeae or Chlamydia trachomatis
Mechanism of Action
- Binds reversibly to the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria
- Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by preventing the access of aminoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex
- Bacteriostatic activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to oxytetracycline or any component of the formulation
- Hypersensitivity to other tetracyclines
Adverse Reactions
- Transient stinging or burning upon application
- Blurry vision immediately following administration
- Allergic reactions including pruritus, swelling, and urticaria
- Superinfection with non-susceptible organisms, including fungi, with prolonged use
Drug Interactions
- Local antagonistic effects possible if combined with other bacteriostatic ophthalmic anti-infectives
- Systemic absorption from ophthalmic use is minimal, making significant systemic drug interactions unlikely
