Forms & Strengths
- Ophthalmic solution: 0.5% - 5%
Adult Dosing
- Ophthalmic: Instill 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye(s) every 3 to 4 hours or as directed by the clinician based on infection severity.
Pediatric Dosing
- Ophthalmic: Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients are not well established; use with caution and dose based on clinical evaluation.
Indications
- Treatment of superficial ocular bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms.
Mechanism of Action
- Aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds irreversibly to the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to cell death.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to dihydrostreptomycin or other aminoglycosides
- Fungal or viral ocular infections
- Epithelial herpes simplex keratitis
Adverse Reactions
- Transient ocular burning or stinging upon instillation
- Allergic contact dermatitis
- Pruritus of the eyelids
- Conjunctival erythema
Drug Interactions
- Concomitant topical ocular corticosteroids may mask signs of bacterial, fungal, or viral infections
- Concurrent use of other neurotoxic or ototoxic topical/systemic agents should be monitored closely if systemic absorption occurs
