Forms & Strengths
- Ophthalmic Ointment: 0.5%
Adult Dosing
- Bacterial conjunctivitis: Apply a 1 cm ribbon of ointment to the affected eye(s) up to 6 times daily depending on severity.
Pediatric Dosing
- Neonatal ophthalmia neonatorum prophylaxis: Apply a 1 cm ribbon of 0.5% ointment to each eye once immediately after birth.
- Bacterial conjunctivitis in infants and children: Apply a 1 cm ribbon to the affected eye(s) up to 4 to 6 times daily.
Indications
- Treatment of superficial ocular infections involving the conjunctiva and/or cornea caused by susceptible organisms
- Prophylaxis of ophthalmia neonatorum due to Neisseria gonorrhoeae or Chlamydia trachomatis
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding reversibly to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby inhibiting translocation of peptidyl transfer-RNA.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to erythromycin or any component of the formulation
Adverse Reactions
- Temporary blurred vision
- Minor ocular irritation
- Burning or stinging upon application
- Hypersensitivity reactions
Drug Interactions
- Concomitant topical ocular products should be administered at least 5 minutes apart from erythromycin ointment.
