Forms & Strengths
- Ophthalmic solution 1% (AzaSite)
Adult Dosing
- Bacterial conjunctivitis: Instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily (approx. 8 to 12 hours apart) for days 1 and 2, then 1 drop daily for days 3 through 7
Pediatric Dosing
- Bacterial conjunctivitis (Children > 1 year): Instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily for days 1 and 2, then 1 drop daily for days 3 through 7
Indications
- Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible isolates of CDC coryneform group G, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Streptococcus mitis group
Mechanism of Action
- Azithromycin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and preventing cellular growth
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to azithromycin or any components of the formulation
Adverse Reactions
- Eye irritation, blurred vision, stinging, burning, or contact dermatitis upon instillation
Drug Interactions
- No specific systemic drug-drug interactions are expected with ophthalmic azithromycin due to minimal systemic absorption; avoid concurrent use of other topical ophthalmic products within 15 minutes
