Adult Dosing
- Instill 1 to 2 drops into the affected eye(s) up to 4 to 6 times daily, or as directed by physician.
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients under 2 months not established; use with caution in older children, typically 1 to 2 drops 3 to 4 times daily.
Indications
- Treatment of superficial ocular infections involving the conjunctiva and/or cornea caused by susceptible organisms.
Mechanism of Action
- Competitive inhibition of bacterial para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) utilization, preventing folic acid synthesis required for bacterial growth.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides or any component of the formulation.
- Neonates under 2 months of age due to risk of kernicterus.
Adverse Reactions
- Transient stinging or burning upon instillation
- Local irritation
- Hypersensitivity reactions including pruritus, eyelid edema, and contact dermatitis
- Rare severe cutaneous adverse reactions
Drug Interactions
- Incompatible with local anesthetics containing PABA (e.g., tetracaine), which may antagonize the antibacterial activity of sulfonamides.
- Precipitation may occur if used concomitantly with silver-containing preparations in the eye.
