Adult Dosing
- Apply 3% ointment 5 times daily (approx. every 4 hours while awake) until 3 days after healing is complete.
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients under 2 years have not been established; use same adult regimen if indicated by clinical discretion.
Indications
- Treatment of acute epithelial keratitis due to Herpes simplex virus.
Mechanism of Action
- Synthetic purine nucleoside analogue that inhibits herpes simplex virus DNA polymerase and incorporates into viral DNA, halting chain elongation.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to aciclovir, valaciclovir, or any component of the formulation.
Adverse Reactions
- Transient stinging or burning upon application
- Punctate keratitis
- Follicular conjunctivitis
- Contact dermatitis
Drug Interactions
- No clinically significant systemic drug interactions are expected due to minimal systemic absorption following topical ophthalmic administration.
