interferon
S01AD05
Forms & Strengths
- Ophthalmic solution: 1 million IU/mL (interferon alfa)
Adult Dosing
- Viral keratitis / Conjunctivitis: 1 drop instilled into the affected eye(s) 4 to 6 times daily for up to 14 days or until clinical resolution.
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy not established; use in pediatric patients is off-label and determined by specialist discretion.
Indications
- Treatment of viral eye infections, specifically viral keratitis and viral conjunctivitis (e.g., adenovirus, herpes simplex virus).
Mechanism of Action
- Binds to specific cell-surface receptors, initiating intracellular signaling that induces antiviral proteins (e.g., 2',5'-oligoadenylate synthetase, protein kinase R), inhibiting viral replication and modulating immune responses.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to natural or recombinant human interferons or any component of the formulation
- Severe pre-existing autoimmune disease
Adverse Reactions
- Transient ocular burning or stinging upon instillation
- Blurred vision
- Conjunctival hyperemia
- Lacrimation
- Rarely, allergic contact dermatitis or punctate keratitis
Drug Interactions
- Immunosuppressive agents: May antagonize the antiviral or immunomodulatory effects of topical interferon
- Other ophthalmic medications: Allow at least a 5-minute interval between multiple topical eye drops to prevent washout
Curated Content: Needs Vetting Before Put to Clinical Use
