Forms & Strengths
- 0.3% ophthalmic solution (single‑dose vial)
- 0.1% ophthalmic solution (single‑dose vial)
Adult Dosing
- Instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) every 2 h while awake for the first 48 h, then every 4 h for 5‑7 days
- Do not exceed 8 drops per day per eye
Pediatric Dosing
- Same regimen as adults for children ≥1 month old, provided body weight >5 kg
- For infants <1 month or <5 kg, safety not established; use only if benefit outweighs risk
Indications
- Acute bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains
- Bacterial keratitis and corneal ulceration due to susceptible organisms
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, preventing DNA replication and transcription
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to norfloxacin or any fluoroquinolone
- Viral, fungal, or allergic conjunctivitis
Adverse Reactions
- Transient ocular burning, stinging, or tearing
- Conjunctival hyperemia
- Epithelial keratitis or corneal edema (rare)
- Allergic conjunctivitis with eyelid edema
Drug Interactions
- Concurrent systemic fluoroquinolones may increase risk of CNS toxicity (seizures, tremor)
- Topical corticosteroids may mask infection progression
- Anticholinergic eye drops may reduce pupil dilation, potentially affecting drug distribution
