Forms & Strengths
- Ophthalmic Solution: 0.5% (5 mg/mL)
Adult Dosing
- Bacterial conjunctivitis: Days 1-2: Instill 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye(s) every 2 hours while awake, up to 8 times daily.
- Bacterial conjunctivitis: Days 3-7: Instill 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye(s) up to 4 times daily while awake.
Pediatric Dosing
- Bacterial conjunctivitis (Patients > 1 year): Days 1-2: Instill 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye(s) every 2 hours while awake, up to 8 times daily.
- Bacterial conjunctivitis (Patients > 1 year): Days 3-7: Instill 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye(s) up to 4 times daily while awake.
Indications
- Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Mechanism of Action
- Fluoroquinolone antibacterial that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin, other quinolones, or any component of the formulation.
Adverse Reactions
- Transient decreased vision
- Fever
- Foreign body sensation
- Headache
- Transient ocular burning
- Ocular pain or discomfort
- Pharyngitis
- Photophobia
Drug Interactions
- Specific formal drug interaction studies have not been conducted with topical ophthalmic levofloxacin.
- Systemic administration of some quinolones can elevate serum concentrations ofophylline, interfere with caffeine metabolism, and enhance the effects of oral anticoagulants like warfarin.
