Adult Dosing
- Bacterial conjunctivitis: Day 1-2: Instill 1 drop into affected eye(s) every 2 hours while awake, up to 8 times daily.
- Bacterial conjunctivitis: Day 3-7: Instill 1 drop up to 4 times daily while awake.
Pediatric Dosing
- Pediatric patients >1 year: Dosage is the same as adults for bacterial conjunctivitis.
- Safety and efficacy in children <1 year have not been established.
Indications
- Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Mechanism of Action
- Fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes required for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to gatifloxacin, other fluoroquinolones, or any component of the formulation.
Adverse Reactions
- Conjunctival irritation
- Increased lacrimation
- Keratitis
- Papillary conjunctivitis
- Blurred vision
- Eye dryness
- Eye discharge
Drug Interactions
- Specific drug interactions for ophthalmic gatifloxacin are unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption.
- If using more than one topical ophthalmic drug, separate administration by at least 5 minutes.
