Forms & Strengths
- Ophthalmic solution 0.02%
- Topical solution 0.2%
- Topical ointment 0.2%
Adult Dosing
- Ophthalmic: Instill 1-2 drops into the affected eye(s) 3-4 times daily.
- Topical: Apply a small amount to the affected area 2-3 times daily or as needed.
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been firmly established.
- Use with caution and consult a pediatric specialist for age-appropriate dosing if necessary.
Indications
- Treatment of superficial bacterial infections of the eye and surrounding structures
- Topical adjunct in the management of second- and third-degree burns
- Prevention and treatment of surface bacterial infections in skin grafts and wounds
Mechanism of Action
- Broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that inhibits bacterial enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism
- Bacteriostatic or bactericidal depending on drug concentration and susceptibility of the organism
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to nitrofural (nitrofurazone) or any component of the formulation
- Known glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency
Adverse Reactions
- Local irritation, burning, or stinging upon application
- Contact dermatitis and allergic skin reactions
- Photosensitivity reactions
Drug Interactions
- May be inactivated in the presence of blood, serum, or purulent exudates
- Avoid concurrent use of other topical antimicrobial agents on the same site to prevent antagonistic effects or increased irritation
