Adult Dosing
- Apply a small amount of ointment to the conjunctival sac 3 to 5 times daily.
- Duration of treatment should be limited to acute inflammatory conditions, typically not exceeding 10-14 days without medical reassessment.
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in children have not been extensively established in large clinical trials; use with caution and under medical supervision.
- Pediatric dosing mirrors adult dosing if prescribed for acute blepharitis or conjunctivitis, typically a small amount applied 2-3 times daily.
Indications
- Treatment of acute, non-infectious inflammatory conditions of the eye and eyelids, such as blepharitis and marginal blepharitis.
- Adjuvant treatment for acute conjunctivitis without deep corneal involvement.
Mechanism of Action
- Bismuth derivative with mild astringent and antiseptic properties.
- Coagulates proteins on the ocular mucosa, reducing local exudation, hyperemia, and inflammation.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to bibrocathol or any component of the formulation.
- Bismuth hypersensitivity.
- Deep corneal ulcers or fungal/viral ocular infections where astringents may worsen tissue damage.
Adverse Reactions
- Transient stinging or burning sensation immediately upon application.
- Local allergic or hypersensitivity reactions (contact dermatitis, eyelid swelling, redness).
- Temporary blurred vision due to the ointment base.
Drug Interactions
- Concurrent use of other topical ophthalmic medications may alter absorption; separate administration by at least 15 minutes.
- Avoid simultaneous application of other heavy metal-containing eye drops to prevent local precipitation or increased toxicity.
