Adult Dosing
- 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye up to 4 to 6 times daily
- Duration of treatment should generally not exceed 7 to 10 days without re-evaluation
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients are established based on clinical practice, using adult concentrations
- 1 drop in the affected eye up to 4 times daily under medical supervision
Indications
- Treatment of superficial ocular infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Bacterial conjunctivitis and blepharitis
Mechanism of Action
- Cationic antiseptic and disinfectant belonging to the diamidine group
- Binds to the phospholipid layer of bacterial cell membranes, altering permeability and causing leakage of intracellular constituents
- Exhibits bacteriostatic and fungistatic properties against a range of gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to hexamidine or any components of the formulation
- Not for injection or intraocular administration
Adverse Reactions
- Transient stinging or burning upon instillation
- Allergic contact dermatitis
- Ocular irritation or hyperemia in sensitive individuals
Drug Interactions
- No significant systemic drug interactions anticipated due to minimal systemic absorption
- Avoid simultaneous administration of other topical ophthalmic medications without a 5 to 10-minute interval
