Forms & Strengths
- Ophthalmic suspension: clobetasone butyrate 0.1% combined with antimicrobial agents
Adult Dosing
- Instill 1 drop into the affected eye(s) 2 to 4 times daily
- Taper frequency down upon clinical improvement; do not discontinue abruptly
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients below 18 years not established
- Use requires careful risk-benefit analysis by an ophthalmologist
Indications
- Steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions where bacterial infection exists or is at high risk
Mechanism of Action
- Clobetasone: topical corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties
- Anti-infective component: provides concurrent antimicrobial coverage against susceptible ocular pathogens
Contraindications
- Acute epithelial herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic keratitis)
- Vaccinia, varicella, and other viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva
- Mycobacterial or fungal infections of the eye
- Hypersensitivity to clobetasone, corticosteroids, or any component of the formulation
Adverse Reactions
- Transient stinging or burning upon instillation
- Elevated intraocular pressure with potential for glaucoma
- Posterior subcapsular cataract formation
- Delayed wound healing
- Secondary ocular infections (bacterial, fungal, or viral)
Drug Interactions
- Anticholinergics: concurrent use may increase intraocular pressure
- Topical NSAIDs: may delay corneal wound healing when used concomitantly with topical steroids
