Forms & Strengths
- Ophthalmic Solution: 2% (20 mg/mL)
Adult Dosing
- Allergic conjunctivitis: Instill 1 to 2 drops in each affected eye 4 to 6 times daily at regular intervals
Pediatric Dosing
- Children > 4 years: Instill 1 to 2 drops in each affected eye 4 to 6 times daily at regular intervals
- Safety and efficacy in children < 4 years not established
Indications
- Treatment of vernal keratoconjunctivitis, vernal conjunctivitis, and vernal keratitis
- Symptomatic treatment of acute and chronic allergic conjunctivitis
Mechanism of Action
- Mast cell stabilizer that inhibits the degranulation of sensitized mast cells
- Prevents the release of histamine and slow-reacting substance of anaphylaxis (SRS-A) mediators of type I allergic reactions
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cromolyn sodium or any component of the formulation
Adverse Reactions
- Transient ocular stinging or burning upon instillation
- Eye irritation, injection, or watery eyes
- Itchy eyes
- Styes
- Dry eyes
- Puffiness
Drug Interactions
- No clinically significant systemic drug interactions identified due to minimal systemic absorption following topical ophthalmic administration
- Concurrent use of other eye drops should be separated by at least 5 to 10 minutes
