S01HA30
Forms & Strengths
- Ophthalmic solution, fixed-dose combos (e.g., 0.1% antihistamine + 0.025% mast‑cell stabilizer)
- Ophthalmic solution, antihistamine + vasoconstrictor (e.g., 0.05% antihistamine + 0.025% naphazoline)
- Preservative‑free single‑dose vials, typical volume 0.5 mL
Adult Dosing
- 1–2 drops in each affected eye twice daily; may increase to four times daily for severe symptoms
- Do not exceed 8 drops per eye per day
- If using combination with vasoconstrictor, limit to 3 days continuous use
Pediatric Dosing
- Children ≥2 years: same as adult dosing
- Children 6 months–2 years: 1 drop per eye twice daily, if tolerated
- Use only under physician supervision in infants <6 months
Indications
- Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis
- Perennial allergic conjunctivitis
- Allergic keratoconjunctivitis
- Ocular itching and redness due to allergens
Mechanism of Action
- Antihistamine blocks H1 receptors, preventing histamine‑mediated itching and vasodilation
- Mast‑cell stabilizer inhibits degranulation, reducing release of inflammatory mediators
- Vasoconstrictor narrows conjunctival vessels, decreasing hyperemia
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
- Active ocular infection (bacterial, viral, fungal)
- Narrow‑angle (angle‑closure) glaucoma when vasoconstrictor is present
- Contact lens wearers unless formulation is labeled compatible
Adverse Reactions
- Transient burning or stinging upon instillation
- Mild ocular irritation or foreign‑body sensation
- Transient blurred vision
- Rare allergic contact dermatitis of the eyelid
- Increased intra‑ocular pressure with prolonged vasoconstrictor use
Drug Interactions
- Concurrent use of other topical ocular vasoconstrictors may cause additive IOP rise
- May reduce efficacy of topical beta‑blockers used for glaucoma
- Systemic antihistamines can increase sedation if combined with oral antihistamines
- Avoid simultaneous administration with ophthalmic antibiotics unless spaced 5 min apart
