Forms & Strengths

0.06% (0.6 mg/mL) sterile ophthalmic solution

Adult Dosing

Apply 1‑2 drops to ocular surface; leave in contact 30‑60 seconds then rinse with balanced salt solution; single use per procedure

Pediatric Dosing

Same concentration as adults; use minimal volume (1 drop) and monitor for irritation; avoid in neonates unless essential

Indications

Staining of corneal epithelial defects for diagnostic evaluation
Capsular staining during cataract surgery to enhance visualization
Intra‑ocular staining for vitreoretinal procedures

Mechanism of Action

Azo dye that selectively binds to cells with compromised plasma membranes, highlighting non‑viable or exposed tissue

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to trypan blue or any component of the formulation
Active ocular infection or ulceration
Severe ocular surface disease (e.g., severe dry eye, Stevens‑Johnson syndrome)

Adverse Reactions

Transient stinging, burning, or foreign‑body sensation
Mild conjunctival hyperemia
Allergic conjunctivitis (rare)
Corneal endothelial cell toxicity at high concentration or prolonged exposure
Temporary increase in intraocular pressure

Drug Interactions

Avoid concurrent use of other ophthalmic dyes to prevent additive staining
