bevacizumab
S01LA08
Forms & Strengths
- Intravitreal injection: 25 mg/mL (1.25 mg delivered in 0.05 mL)
Adult Dosing
- Neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration: 1.25 mg intravitreally every 4 weeks as needed
- Diabetic macular edema: 1.25 mg intravitreally every 4 weeks as needed
- Retinal vein occlusion-associated macular edema: 1.25 mg intravitreally every 4 weeks as needed
Pediatric Dosing
- Retinopathy of prematurity (off-label): 0.25 mg to 0.625 mg intravitreally per dose
Indications
- Neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration
- Macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion
- Diabetic macular edema
- Retinopathy of prematurity (off-label)
Mechanism of Action
- Recombinant humanized monoclonal IgG1 antibody that binds to and neutralizes vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)
- Inhibits VEGF receptor binding, suppressing endothelial cell proliferation, vascular permeability, and new blood vessel formation in the retina
Contraindications
- Ocular or peri-ocular infections
- Active intraocular inflammation
- Known hypersensitivity to bevacizumab or any component of the formulation
Adverse Reactions
- Endophthalmitis
- Increased intraocular pressure
- Intraocular inflammation
- Transient visual disturbances
- Retinal detachment
- Thromboembolic events (systemic absorption)
Drug Interactions
- Concomitant intravitreal anti-VEGF agents (avoid concurrent use due to additive risk of adverse effects)
- Anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents (may theoretically increase bleeding risk, though systemic levels are very low)
