ethylmorphine
S01XA06
Forms & Strengths
- Ophthalmic drops: 1% to 2% solution
Adult Dosing
- Instill 1 to 2 drops into the affected eye(s) 1 to 3 times daily as directed for localized chemosis and analgesia.
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been firmly established; use with caution and only under specialist supervision.
Indications
- Indicated for use as an ocular decongestant
- Used to induce deliberate chemosis in specific corneal conditions to promote absorption
- Relief of ocular pain in certain inflammatory conditions
Mechanism of Action
- Acts as an opioid derivative acting on local ocular tissues
- Induces localized vasodilation and chemosis (edema of the conjunctiva), which historically was believed to increase local circulation and clearance of inflammatory exudates
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ethylmorphine or other opioids
- Acute infectious conjunctivitis where vasodilation may worsen the infection
- Angle-closure glaucoma
Adverse Reactions
- Transient ocular stinging or burning upon instillation
- Marked conjunctival hyperemia and chemosis (often intentional for the drug's effect)
- Blurred vision
- Allergic contact dermatitis
Drug Interactions
- Concurrent use of other topical ophthalmic vasoconstrictors may lead to additive vascular effects
- Local anesthetics may alter absorption when applied simultaneously
