mercaptamine
S01XA21
Forms & Strengths
- Ophthalmic solution 0.1% w/v
- Sterile single‑dose ampoules
- Preservative‑free formulation
Adult Dosing
- Instill 1‑2 drops into the affected eye(s) four times daily
- Can be increased to six times daily for severe dry‑eye symptoms
- Do not exceed 8 drops per day to avoid ocular surface toxicity
Pediatric Dosing
- Instill 1 drop into the affected eye(s) four times daily for children ≥2 years
- For infants and toddlers, use 1 drop every 6 hours under ophthalmic supervision
- Dose adjustment based on tolerance and severity of ocular irritation
Indications
- Dry eye disease (keratoconjunctivitis sicca)
- Post‑operative ocular surface inflammation
- Mucin deficiency disorders of the corneal epithelium
Mechanism of Action
- Thiols reduce disulfide bonds in mucin, enhancing tear film stability
- Antioxidant activity scavenges reactive oxygen species on the ocular surface
- Promotes epithelial cell migration and wound healing
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to mercaptamine or any excipients
- Active bacterial, viral or fungal ocular infection
- Severe corneal ulceration until infection is controlled
Adverse Reactions
- Transient burning or stinging upon instillation
- Blurred vision lasting <5 minutes
- Conjunctival hyperemia or mild allergic conjunctivitis
- Rare corneal epithelial toxicity with excessive dosing
Drug Interactions
- Concurrent use with other ophthalmic agents may dilute efficacy; stagger instillation by ≥5 minutes
- Avoid simultaneous use with preservative‑containing drops that may increase ocular irritation
- Systemic drugs have no significant interaction due to negligible systemic absorption
