Adult Dosing
- Instill 3 to 5 drops into the affected ear 3 to 4 times daily
- Apply topically to the external auditory canal as directed for bacterial infections
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients not well established
- Use with caution in children; dose should be adjusted based on clinical response and practitioner discretion
Indications
- Treatment of superficial bacterial infections of the external ear canal (otitis externa)
- Adjunctive antiseptic therapy for otic conditions caused by susceptible organisms
Mechanism of Action
- Nitrofuran derivative with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity
- Interferes with bacterial carbohydrate metabolism by inhibiting bacterial enzymes
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to nitrofural, nitrofurazone, or any component of the formulation
- Perforated tympanic membrane (risk of ototoxicity or inner ear irritation)
Adverse Reactions
- Local irritation, burning, or stinging at the application site
- Contact dermatitis and allergic skin reactions
- Pruritus and erythema
Drug Interactions
- No major systemic drug interactions expected due to limited absorption
- Avoid concurrent use of other topical otic antibiotics or local anesthetics to prevent compounding irritation
