Adult Dosing
- Radioactive cesium contamination: 3 g (6 capsules) orally three times daily
- Thallium poisoning: 3 g (6 capsules) orally three times daily, can be increased up to 20 g daily if necessary
Pediatric Dosing
- Children 2 to 12 years: 1 g (2 capsules) orally three times daily
- Children under 2 years: Safety and efficacy not established, but doses of 1 g three times daily have been used in severe cases
Indications
- Treatment of known or suspected internal contamination with radioactive cesium
- Treatment of known or suspected internal contamination with thallium
Mechanism of Action
- Acts by ion exchange, adsorption, and entrapment within its crystal structure
- Binds thallium and cesium ions in the gastrointestinal tract, interrupting their enterohepatic circulation and increasing their fecal excretion
Contraindications
- None known for the emergency indication of internal radioactive cesium or thallium contamination
Adverse Reactions
- Constipation (very common)
- Hypokalemia
- Fecal discoloration (dark blue/black)
- Nausea and gastric upset
Drug Interactions
- May bind simultaneously to other orally administered drugs, decreasing their absorption and efficacy
- May decrease absorption of oral nutritional supplements and minerals
