pancreozymin (cholecystokinin)
V04CK02
Forms & Strengths
- Injectable powder for reconstitution, diagnostic use
Adult Dosing
- Diagnostic test dose: Intravenous administration tailored to specific pancreatic exocrine function or gallbladder contraction testing protocols (historically 1 to 4 units/kg or specific diagnostic standard units).
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy not established; generally restricted or not recommended in pediatric populations outside specialized diagnostic protocols.
Indications
- Diagnostic agent for evaluation of exocrine pancreatic function
- Stimulation of gallbladder contraction for cholecystography or duodenal drainage
Mechanism of Action
- Peptide hormone that stimulates the contraction of the gallbladder and the secretion of pancreatic enzymes rich in amylase, trypsin, and lipase, while reducing gastric acid secretion.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cholecystokinin or pancreozymin preparations
- Acute pancreatitis
- Known or suspected complete biliary tract obstruction
- Symptomatic gallbladder disease
Adverse Reactions
- Abdominal cramps
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Flushing
- Dizziness
- Allergic reactions or anaphylaxis
Drug Interactions
- Anticholinergic agents may antagonize the gallbladder-contracting effects of pancreozymin
- Narcotic analgesics may induce spasm of the sphincter of Oddi, interfering with diagnostic biliary drainage
