indocyanine green
V04CX01
Forms & Strengths
- Powder for reconstitution: 25 mg vial
- Powder for reconstitution: 50 mg vial
Adult Dosing
- Cardiac output: 5 mg to 10 mg per injection as a sterile aqueous solution
- Hepatic function: 0.5 mg/kg body weight intravenously
- Ophthalmic angiography: 40 mg in 2 mL sterile water for injection
Pediatric Dosing
- Cardiac output: 0.25 mg to 0.5 mg per injection (safety and efficacy not fully established)
- Angiography: Dose adjusted based on body weight and clinical judgment
Indications
- Determination of cardiac output and stroke volume
- Hepatic function and blood flow evaluation
- Fluorescence angiography of the choroidal and retinal vasculature
Mechanism of Action
- Binds strongly to plasma proteins upon intravenous administration, remaining almost exclusively in the intravascular space
- Absorbs and emits light in the near-infrared spectrum (peak absorption ~805 nm)
- Cleared rapidly and almost exclusively by the liver into the bile without significant extrahepatic metabolism
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to indocyanine green
- Iodide allergy (contains sodium iodide)
Adverse Reactions
- Anaphylactic or urticarial reactions
- Nausea and vomiting
- Flushing and sweating
- Hypotension or tachycardia
Drug Interactions
- Anticoagulants may alter hepatic blood flow measurements
- Bisulfites (sodium bisulfite injection) can reduce absorption peak of indocyanine green
- Narcotics and barbiturates may alter cardiac output measurements
