iocarmic acid
V08AA08
Forms & Strengths
- Injectable solution 50% to 70% iodine concentration
Adult Dosing
- Dose varies widely by diagnostic procedure (arthrography, hysterosalpingography, cisternography)
- Typically 1 mL to 20 mL depending on anatomical site and imaging modality
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients not thoroughly established
- Use restricted to specialized diagnostic procedures under expert supervision with reduced weight-based dosing
Indications
- Radiopaque contrast medium for diagnostic radiography
- Used in arthrography, hysterosalpingography, and specialized neuroradiological procedures
Mechanism of Action
- Contains organically bound iodine which absorbs X-rays, thereby enhancing radiographic visualization of internal anatomical structures
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to iocarmic acid or other iodinated contrast agents
- Manifest hyperthyroidism
- Severe systemic infections or acute inflammation in areas of direct injection
Adverse Reactions
- Injection site pain and localized inflammation
- Mild hypersensitivity reactions including urticaria, pruritus, and flushing
- Rare severe anaphylactoid reactions, bronchospasm, and hypotension
- Chemical synovitis when used inappropriately in arthrography
Drug Interactions
- Beta-blockers may exacerbate severe hypersensitivity reactions and blunt response to epinephrine
- Interferes with thyroid function tests utilizing radioactive iodine uptake for several weeks post-administration
- Metformin should be temporarily discontinued in patients with renal impairment receiving intravascular iodinated contrast
