iobenzamic acid
V08AC05
Adult Dosing
- Cholecystography: 2 to 3 g (4 to 6 tablets) taken orally 10 to 15 hours before radiography
- Dose typically calculated based on body weight (approx. 50 mg/kg)
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients not established; use generally avoided or individualized by pediatric specialists
Indications
- Radiographic visualization of the gallbladder (oral cholecystography)
Mechanism of Action
- Triiodinated benzoic acid derivative containing a high proportion of organically bound iodine
- Absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, excreted by the liver into the bile, and concentrated in the gallbladder, rendering it radiopaque for X-ray imaging
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to iodine-containing compounds
- Severe hepatic or renal impairment
- Acute cholecystitis
- Severe cardiovascular disease
Adverse Reactions
- Gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps
- Hypersensitivity: urticaria, pruritus, rash, anaphylactoid reactions
- Renal: transient renal dysfunction
- Neurological: headache, dizziness
Drug Interactions
- Cholecystographic agents may impair thyroid function test uptake of radioiodine
- Hepatotoxic drugs may increase the risk of liver injury
- Concurrent use with other cholecystographic media increases toxicity risk
