propyliodone
V08AD03
Forms & Strengths
- Aqueous suspension: 50% to 60% w/v
- Oily suspension: 50% to 60% w/v in arachis oil
Adult Dosing
- Bronchography: 10 mL to 20 mL administered via endotracheal or transtracheal catheter
- Dose varies depending on the specific bronchial tree area to be visualized
Pediatric Dosing
- Bronchography: 2 mL to 10 mL administered via endotracheal catheter depending on age and size
- Use is generally restricted and adjusted based on pediatric body weight and clinical necessity
Indications
- Radiographic visualization of the bronchial tree
- Diagnostic bronchography for pulmonary lesions, bronchiectasis, and airway obstructions
Mechanism of Action
- Contains iodine, which is radiopaque and strongly absorbs X-rays
- Provides contrast outlining the mucosal surface of the bronchi during fluoroscopy and radiography
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to iodine or iodine-containing contrast media
- Severe pulmonary insufficiency or respiratory distress
- Active pulmonary hemorrhage or severe asthma
Adverse Reactions
- Allergic reactions ranging from rash and urticaria to anaphylaxis
- Pulmonary inflammation, lipoid pneumonia (with oily formulations), or granuloma formation
- Transient bronchospasm and dyspnea
- Iodism (chronic iodine toxicity with prolonged retention)
Drug Interactions
- Beta-blockers may increase the risk of severe hypersensitivity reactions and complicate the treatment of bronchospasm
- Interferes with thyroid function tests (radioactive iodine uptake) for several weeks following administration
