ferumoxsil
V08CB01
Forms & Strengths
- Oral suspension containing silicone-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide particles
- Concentration equivalent to 0.75 mg/mL Fe (approximate magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent)
Adult Dosing
- Diagnostic MRI preparation: 15 to 30 mL of oral suspension diluted in water or juice
- Administered orally approximately 15 to 30 minutes prior to magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen or gastrointestinal tract
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established
- Use in children is generally off-label and requires specialized institutional protocols if utilized
Indications
- Contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the gastrointestinal tract
- Delineation of the bowel from surrounding abdominal and pelvic organs to improve diagnostic accuracy
Mechanism of Action
- Superparamagnetic iron oxide particles shorten T1, T2, and T2* relaxation times of protons in the gastrointestinal lumen
- Produces marked signal loss (darkening) on T2-weighted and gradient-echo MRI sequences, reducing bowel motion artifacts and distinguishing bowel loops from adjacent pathology
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to iron oxide or any component of the suspension
- Patients with severe iron overload disorders (e.g., hemochromatosis)
Adverse Reactions
- Mild and transient gastrointestinal disturbances including nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain or cramping
- Dark or black stools secondary to unabsorbed iron content
- Rare allergic or hypersensitivity skin reactions
Drug Interactions
- May potentially decrease the oral absorption of concurrently administered medications due to binding by iron oxide particles
- No significant systemic pharmacokinetic drug-is interactions expected due to minimal gastrointestinal absorption
Curated Content: Needs Vetting Before Put to Clinical Use
