technetium (99mTc) gluconate
V09CA05
Forms & Strengths
- Kit for the preparation of technetium Tc 99m gluconate injection
Adult Dosing
- Intravenous injection of 185 to 370 MBq (5 to 10 mCi) of technetium Tc 99m gluconate
- Imaging typically performed 1 to 2 hours post-injection
Pediatric Dosing
- Dosing adjusted based on body surface area or weight according to nuclear medicine guidelines
- Typically 3.7 to 7.4 MBq/kg with a minimum recommended dose
Indications
- Renal scintigraphy and visualization of renal parenchyma
- Evaluation of renal blood flow, function, and morphological abnormalities
Mechanism of Action
- Technetium Tc 99m is bound to sodium gluconate and localizes in the renal cortex
- Retained within the renal tubular cells and vascular spaces, allowing static imaging of renal parenchyma
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to technetium Tc 99m or gluconate preparations
- Pregnancy, unless the clinical benefit outweighs the potential radiation risk
- Lactation (breastfeeding should be interrupted for a specified period after administration)
Adverse Reactions
- Hypersensitivity reactions including rash, pruritus, and urticaria (rare)
- Injection site reactions such as pain or erythema
- Nausea and dizziness (infrequent)
Drug Interactions
- Drugs that significantly alter renal blood flow or function may affect radiopharmaceutical biodistribution
- Prior administration of other renal imaging agents may cause interference
