technetium (99mTc) tin colloid
V09DB04
Forms & Strengths
- Sterile lyophilized tin colloid kit for reconstitution with Tc-99m pertechnetate
- Reconstituted solution containing 5-30 mCi (185-1110 MBq) Tc-99m per dose
Adult Dosing
- Liver/spleen scan: 5‑10 mCi (185‑370 MBq) IV bolus
- Sentinel lymph node mapping: 0.5‑2 mCi (18‑74 MBq) per injection site
- Multiple injection sites for bilateral mapping may be used, total not >2 mCi
Pediatric Dosing
- Liver/spleen scan: 0.05‑0.1 mCi/kg (1.85‑3.7 MBq/kg), max 5 mCi (185 MBq)
- Sentinel node mapping: 0.01‑0.03 mCi/kg (0.37‑1.1 MBq/kg), max 0.5 mCi (18 MBq) per site
Indications
- Hepatobiliary scintigraphy for assessment of liver size, contour and function
- Splenic imaging and detection of splenic lesions
- Sentinel lymph node identification in breast cancer, melanoma, and other solid tumors
- Evaluation of portal hypertension and hepatic cirrhosis
Mechanism of Action
- Tc-99m tin colloid particles are phagocytosed by reticuloendothelial cells of liver, spleen, and bone marrow
- Gamma emission (140 keV) from Tc-99m provides high‑resolution scintigraphic images
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to tin colloid or any component of the kit
- Pregnancy: avoid unless essential for maternal diagnosis
- Breastfeeding: discontinue milk for 24 h after administration
Adverse Reactions
- Rare allergic reactions: urticaria, pruritus, bronchospasm
- Injection site pain or erythema
- Transient hypotension (rare)
- Radiation exposure: <0.1 mSv for typical adult dose
Drug Interactions
- No clinically significant pharmacologic interactions
- Concurrent administration of other radiopharmaceuticals may cause image contamination; allow appropriate clearance intervals
- High iodine load can affect thyroid uptake of Tc-99m but not the colloid distribution
