Forms & Strengths
- Kit for the preparation of technetium Tc 99m labeled human albumin microspheres for injection
- Vials containing human albumin microspheres with stannous chloride as a reducing agent
Adult Dosing
- Lung scintigraphy: 37 to 185 MBq (1 to 5 mCi) administered intravenously
- Dose adjusted based on clinical evaluation and nuclear medicine imaging guidelines
Pediatric Dosing
- Lung scintigraphy: 0.5 to 1.5 MBq/kg body weight administered intravenously
- Minimum recommended dose: 18.5 MBq (0.5 mCi) adjusted for pediatric body surface area
Indications
- Lung perfusion scintigraphy for the assessment of pulmonary capillary perfusion
- Evaluation of suspected pulmonary embolism
Mechanism of Action
- Microspheres (diameter 10 to 100 micrometers) are injected intravenously and become temporarily trapped in the precapillary arterioles and capillaries of the lungs
- Distribution of trapped microspheres is directly proportional to regional pulmonary blood flow
Contraindications
- Severe pulmonary hypertension
- Right-to-left cardiac shunts due to the risk of systemic arterial embolization
- Known hypersensitivity to human serum albumin or any component of the preparation
Adverse Reactions
- Hypersensitivity and anaphylactic reactions (rare)
- Fever, chills, nausea, and flushing
- Transient dyspnea or chest discomfort in patients with severe pulmonary hypertension
Drug Interactions
- Drugs that alter pulmonary blood flow or vascular tone may affect the regional distribution of the microspheres
- No significant pharmacological drug-drug interactions known due to the microgram quantities of active ingredients
