iodine (125I) human albumin
V09GB02
Forms & Strengths
- Diagnostic solution for intravenous injection
- Radioactivity concentration varies by manufacturer/calibration date, typically approx 3.7 MBg/mL (0.1 mCi/mL)
Adult Dosing
- Blood volume determination: 37 to 185 kBq (1 to 5 microcuries) IV once
- Cardiac output and cardiac output studies: 185 to 370 kBq (5 to 10 microcuries) IV once
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy not well established in pediatric patients; use only when clinically justified with appropriately reduced weight- or surface area-based doses
Indications
- Determination of total blood volume and plasma volume
- Cardiac output measurement
- Protein turnover studies and localization of cerebral tumors (historical/specialized)
Mechanism of Action
- Human serum albumin radiolabeled with iodine-125 acts as a vascular tracer
- Remains intravascularly for a sufficient period to allow mixing and measurement of blood and plasma volume before gradual extravasation and metabolic degradation
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to human serum albumin or iodine-125
- Pregnancy and lactation (unless diagnostic benefit outweighs high potential risk of fetal radiation)
Adverse Reactions
- Hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis, urticaria, chills, and fever
- Vasomotor reactions and flushing
- Injection site reactions
Drug Interactions
- Other blood volume expanders or plasma substitutes can alter baseline distribution volume and invalidate measurement accuracy
- Radiopaque contrast media and concurrent radioactive diagnostic agents can interfere with counting equipment and baseline radioactivity measurements
