fluoroethylcholine (18F)
V09IX08
Forms & Strengths
- Intravenous injection: 100-400 MBq/mL (2.7-10.8 mCi/mL) at calibration time
Adult Dosing
- Diagnostic PET imaging: 185-370 MBq (5-10 mCi) administered as a single intravenous bolus
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric patients
Indications
- Detection of prostate cancer recurrence in patients with elevated PSA levels following primary therapy
- Staging of intermediate- to high-risk prostate cancer
Mechanism of Action
- Radiolabeled choline analog taken up by prostate cancer cells via choline transporters
- Phosphorylated by choline kinase and trapped within cells with high proliferative activity, allowing PET visualization
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to fluoroethylcholine F 18 or any component of the formulation
Adverse Reactions
- Injection site pain
- Flushing
- Pruritus
- Dysgeusia
- Nausea
Drug Interactions
- Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) may decrease uptake in prostate cancer lesions, potentially yielding false-negative scans
- Exogenous choline supplements theoretically could compete with radiotracer uptake
