Forms & Strengths

Intravenous solution: 111 to 148 megabecquerels (3 to 4 millicuries) per vial at calibration time

Adult Dosing

4 millicuries (148 megabecquerels) intravenously slowly over 1 to 2 minutes, or 1.5 megabecquerels (0.04 millicuries) per kg of body weight
Repeat administration generally not recommended at intervals less than 3 months

Pediatric Dosing

Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients below the age of 18 years have not been established

Indications

Relief of bone pain in patients with painful skeletal metastases confirmed by osteoscintigraphy

Mechanism of Action

Beta-emitting radioisotope that mimics calcium and is preferentially incorporated into newly formed bone mineral sites of active osteoblastic metastatic lesions, delivering localized ionizing radiation to relieve pain

Contraindications

Known or suspected pregnancy
Severe bone marrow compromise, unless clinically justified
Hypersensitivity to strontium or any component

Adverse Reactions

Bone marrow suppression (significant decrease in white blood cell counts and platelet counts)
Increased bone pain ("flare" response) typically occurring within the first few days after injection
Injection site reactions
Fatigue

Drug Interactions

Calcium supplements or calcium-containing medications may interfere with the uptake of strontium-89 and should be withheld prior to administration
Other myelosuppressive agents may increase the risk of severe bone marrow toxicity
